Through the years of listening to my customer’s questions and reasoning. I’ve been able to collaborate several myths of air conditioning. Here are 5 most common myths I have answered.
Myth #1: My air conditioning is not cooling well because I need to charge it with gas (Freon).
Fact: Freon in an air conditioning is recirculated in the system. It never get old, never gets worn out, an never depletes or evaporates.
The only time we need to recharge the Freon is when there is a leak, if this is the case it’s considered a repair. More commonly, If your air conditioning is not preforming the way it use too maybe it time to get it serviced. Filters get dirty, blower wheels get packed with dust and debris, coils get dirty and smelly and condensate drains get clogged. These are a few things that can impede your cooling performance.
Myth #2: Setting my air conditioning thermostat to the lowest temperature will cool the room quickly.
Fact: Dropping the temperature on the thermostat to the lowest temperature only makes the air conditioning run longer and it won’t get colder faster.
example: if you want the room to be 74 degrees then set the thermostat at 74 degrees and it will work unit that temperature is reached. Setting it lower will cause your system to run longer and cause your energy bill to rise.
Myth #3 We don’t need yearly AC maintenance. It’s a waste of money.
Fact: Waiting to the last minute until a problem arises will cost you more money in repairs and electricity.
Some common costly repair due to lack maintenance include: Water damage or mold issues due to a clogged condensate drain; Compressor works harder due to a dirty coil, this cause wasted energy thus a higher energy bill and in worse cases a failed compressor costing 100’s of dollars to replace. With air condition maintenance not only do you get a cleaner, smooth running and cost efficient system but you also get an inspection of the overall condition of your system. Moreover, giving you a healthier living conditions and a peace of mind on those hot, humid and vogy Hawaiian days.
Myth #4: You can save money on your electric bill by running the air conditioning when your not home. Instead of turning it on to cool a hot house all over again.
Fact: The truth is you save energy when the air conditioning is off.
Fact: Turning your AC on to a hot house requires the AC to stay on longer and work harder to bring it down to the desired temperature.
So what should we do not use the AC at all? by all means no, we love air conditioning! So lets reiterate this myth and correct it by saying “You can save money on your electric bill by running the air conditioning all day with the control setting of a programmable thermostat.” the trick is to define your cooling need on a daily basis and have a programmable thermostat replay it daily, week in and week out. Technology is always getting better with phones, computers and yes….thermostats.
Myth #5 Air Conditioning is good for only cooling.
Fact: Yes the main purpose of an AC is to change the temperature of your living environment to your desire. But did you know that there are supplemental “add on” to help improve the condition of the air? such as an in-line dehumidifier integrated in your ducting system to help in humid locations; this helps to control the humidity level and in turn reduces the growth of mold and bacteria; HEPA and Ionic filters they help to remove particulate matter such as dust, smoke, animal dander, etc.. These particulates are associated with micro organisms such as: dust mites, molds, viruses and bacterias.
In fact, there might be some features that you already have on you existing AC that you did’t know about. for example, “dry mode” this helps dehumidifying the air on humid days.
